A Round Pond man has been arrested and charged with possessing and distributing counterfeit U.S. currency in the Midcoast area.
On Wednesday morning, members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Damariscotta Police Department and U.S. Secret Service executed a search warrant at the residence of Tobin Burnham, 32, on Moxie Cove Road in Round Pond.
Burnham was subsequently arrested on the Class B charge of aggravated forgery and transported to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
The warrant and arrest were a result of an ongoing investigation into the passing of numerous counterfeit bills in the towns of Damariscotta, Newcastle, and Waldoboro. Most of the counterfeit bills passed were $20 denominations. A few $5 bills were also passed, according to the LCSO.
The investigation began after Damariscotta and Waldoboro police departments and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received complaints from local businesses and financial institutions who had received the counterfeit bills.
The investigation continues and anyone with information concerning this investigation is asked to contact Detective Scott Hayden of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 882-7332 or shayden@co.lincoln.me.us.
