The large tree on the corner of Main and Jefferson streets in Waldoboro is getting too big to decorate for Christmas and town officials are thinking of other places to hold the town’s annual lighting ceremony.
Meeting at the town office Nov. 24 the Waldoboro Board of Selectmen agreed the ceremonial tree is spectacular, but as Town Manager William Post said, it is getting too spectacular and they should find another tree.
They would have a ceremony at the town office, but the absence of a nearby electric outlet poses a problem, as well, Post said. He suggested they could, in the future, light a tree by the town landing, as there is an electric outlet nearby but the town would have to plant another tree.
Last year the King Solomon’s Lodge took the lead in the ceremony. This year they have passed the torch to the town. The lighting will still occur at the same downtown location, on the same tree, Post said.
This year the tree lighting will be held Sun., Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.
Camden National Bank will offer hot chocolate, Post said, adding that Waldoboro Business Association President Jen Merritt planned to organize an event nearby, which includes singing Christmas carols. The lighting ceremony had been postponed, but Post suggested they maybe could hold it on Dec. 6.
“After this is over, we’ll plan for next year,” Post said. “I hate to pull it (tree lighting) out of downtown.”
