With the approval of the Waldoboro Board of Selectmen, residents will decorate a spruce tree in front of the Waldoboro Town Office this winter.
Resident Jennifer Vannah, the lone member of the town’s tree lighting committee, asked to decorate the tree in front of the town office instead of the tree downtown that has traditionally been decorated. The tree downtown has outgrown residents’ ability to decorate it, Vannah said.
The tree at the town office will be decorated from around Nov. 26 to Dec. 26. A tree lighting ceremony is planned for Nov. 26.
The only cost to the town will be electricity for the lights on the tree, officials said.
Town Manager John Spear told the selectmen he checked with Maine Municipal Association’s legal department about the legality of decorating a tree on town property.
“The law governing holiday displays on public property is complicated and ever changing,” Spear said. MMA officials told Spear the decorations should be acceptable under current law.
