South Bristol and other, unnamed parties have “reached a tentative settlement” in litigation to recover fines levied against former South Bristol resident Jim Nelson, Patrick Parson, an attorney for the town, said Dec. 21.
Two members of the South Bristol Board of Selectmen, Ken Lincoln and Chester Rice, with Parson, attended a settlement conference Dec. 17 before Justice Carl Bradford in Cumberland County Superior Court.
“There are parties that weren’t at the bargaining table that need to approve [the settlement],” Parson said.
Parson anticipates a resolution to the case by the first of the year, he said. The Lincoln County News will report the details of the settlement as they become available.
On June 26, 2007, the South Bristol Board of Selectmen ordered Nelson to pay a total of $60,000 in fines related to the cutting of 59 trees in violation of shoreland zoning ordinances.
Nelson admitted to cutting the trees, including trees within a Damariscotta River Association conservation easement, in Oct. 2006. He filed for bankruptcy in 2008.
