A tenant received minor injuries after a chimney fire erupted in a home on the N. Clary Rd. (Rt. 215) in Jefferson just before 3 a.m. this morning.
John Stevens received slight burns and scrapes after attempting to put out the fire with a garden hose. According to Jefferson Fire Chief Sheridan Bond, Stevens ran down into the basement of the one-story ranch after smelling smoke. Bond said that there were no smoke detectors in the home owned by Guy Peaslee of Boothbay.
The fire started in the basement and was trapped between the two floors, Bond said. Failing to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the area nearest the wood stove, Stevens then called Lincoln County Communications (911).
“The main part of the house was not touched,” Bond said.
According to Bond, Stevens notified the Midcoast Chapter of the American Red Cross, which is providing Stevens with housing for the next few nights.
Bond said that Stevens expects to return to the N. Clary Rd. house either tonight or sometime tomorrow.
