A three-car accident in Wiscasset Sept. 13 closed Rt. 27 for more than a half hour while responders cleared the scene.
According to Wiscasset Police, the accident occurred when a 1998 Saturn driven by James Pepper, 65, of Brunswick crossed the centerline and hit the vehicles of Heidi Grover, 48, and Debra MacPhee, 43, both of Wiscasset.
Pepper was headed south when his car veered into the northbound lane hitting Grover’s 1996 Toyota, police said.
According to police reports, Pepper’s vehicle then spun around and struck MacPhee s northbound 2008 Toyota. Pepper’s car rolled over upon impact and came to a rest on its roof in the middle of the road.
Pepper was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he was listed in satisfactory condition. Grover and MacPhee were both treated at an area hospital and subsequently released.
Wiscasset Police Lt. John Allen said seat belts worn by all three operators were the chief reason why there was not a fatality.
“Even a horrific looking accident like this can be survived if people remember to buckle up,” he said.
