Two areas of clam flats in Waldoboro will be only be open one day each week for several months.
The areas – known as Bugtessel and Back River – have been closed to clamming for years by state order. Recently, the state lifted the ban, but the Waldoboro Shellfish Conservation Commission voted earlier this month to recommend continuing restrictions on both areas.
The Waldoboro Board of Selectmen voted on Nov. 8 to adopt the commission’s recommendations: the areas known as Bugtussel and Back River will be closed until Nov. 17; beginning Nov. 17, they will be open to clamming only on Thursdays until Jan. 5, 2012; after Jan. 5 they will be completely closed until further notice.
