State Police said one of two people involved in a shooting in Waldoboro was responsible for the incident that left a man dead and a woman wounded in the face, July 23, but would not identify the shooter.
Norman P. Benner, 34, was killed and Arlene Lawless, 25, was wounded in the incident at 2177 Friendship Rd. The victims were found by members of Benner’s family at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said, July 24, that Benner and Lawless were “dating, and a couple.” The pair lived at the address where the shooting took place. The house is owned Jeremy McPhee, who also lives at the single-family home. McCausland said police have interviewed McPhee and that he is not a suspect.
“There are separate sections and the couple were in a different section of the house than where he lived,” McCausland said.
Lawless was initially taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland where she was being treated for gunshot wounds to the face. McCausland said she was expected to survive and that police plan to speak with her. On the morning of July 24 a spokeswoman for Maine Medical Center reported Lawless in fair condition.
An autopsy on Benner was completed July 24. McCausland said police were not releasing the results of that examination, but were continuing the investigation.
“Our detectives have completed their work inside the home,” he said that afternoon. McCausland said investigators served a search warrant to go inside the home the morning after the shooting. A team of State Police detectives are working with Waldoboro Police and Lincoln County deputies investigating the circumstances of the shooting. McCausland said he did not expect to report any new information prior to press time.
Visiting hours for Norman Benner will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thurs., July 26 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A funeral is planned for 2 p.m. on Fri., July 27.
