Voters in Waldoboro used the polls to express their desire for a smaller municipal budget on June 8. Six budget-related articles, containing a total of $242,437 in expenditures, were voted down, according to the election results available on the town website.
Along with the budget articles, voters also rejected a proposed change to the town land use ordinance governing subdivisions.
All other items on the warrant passed, most by a wide margin.
Craig Cooley prevailed in a four-way race for a one-year term on the Board of Selectmen. Cooley received 391 votes, Jennifer Merritt 353 votes, Jeffery Hurd 256 votes, and Jane Lichtman 193 votes.
All other municipal races were uncontested.
Clinton Collamore won reelection to a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen.
Danny Jackson and Francis Cross won reelection to the RSU/MSAD 40 School Board for a three-year and a one-year term respectively.
Write-in candidate Carl Walton won a three-year term in the Waldoboro Utility District.
Charles Maxcy won a one-year term on the Budget Committee. Jodie Ruano, Valdemar Skov and write-in candidate Bruce Metrick all won three-year terms to the budget committee.
The budget items voted down were: $97,715 for the office of the town manager, 664 yes, 743 no; $77,352 for the assessing department, 672 yes, 720; $500 for Broadreach Family & Community Services, 613 yes, 759 no; $62,330 for planning and development, 640 yes, 665 no; and $4,540 for upkeep of the A.D. Gray Building, 623 yes, 670 no.
The town also voted down article 3, which asked: “Should any municipal budget question fail to pass, shall the Town authorize the Selectmen to expend an amount not to exceed 3/12 of the previous year(s) appropriation?”
