The Cottage Pantry of Westport Island has ramped up its efforts to help families in need by delivering donated food and household items this fall. The program, which began in late September, is completely confidential according to Westport Island Selectman George Richardson.
“Currently there is a form to fill out and the items can be delivered to protect anonymity, Richardson said. “We have no permanent storage for the items and are hoping someone from the island can help out with a place.”
The town is receiving TEFAP (USDA) commodities four times a year and has qualified to purchase goods from the Good Shepherd food bank in Lewiston. The program takes the place of Shaws Supermarket gift cards, which the town had used previously in matters of general assistance.
The application process is confidential to alleviate the stigma associated with receiving assistance, an increasing concern for families and individuals struggling to adjust to the realities of a down economy. Richardson anticipates serving over 20 families on the island this winter.
