The Wiscasset Transportation Advisory Committee expressed “disappointment” in a response from the Army Corps of Engineers to the town’s letter asking reconsideration and elaboration on the Corps’ findings for a proposed Rt. 1 bypass.
According to committee member Don Jones, the “pro forma” response failed to address the specific criteria that went into the Corps’ study to ascertain the least environmentally harmful route.
“It was simply a rehash of what they had said before. We were asking them to reconsider and tell us the reasons that went into the decision. Is this an objective decision making process or a subjective one?” Jones said.
The committee noted there was no response from either two of Maine’s U.S Senators or Governor Baldacci, all of whom were copied in the original letter to the Army Corps.
The committee is weighing the possibility of formally initiating a Freedom of Information request that would seek all emails, records of meetings, and communications from potential developers involved in the Army Corps findings.
“We felt they were stonewalling our request. Hopefully the freedom of information request can shed a light on the process,” Jones said.
