Two Wiscasset schools have confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu in their student bodies, two at Wiscasset High School and one at Wiscasset Primary School.
As of Friday, Wiscasset High School listed 62 students out sick at the end of the school week with flu-like symptoms, two of them diagnosed with the H1N1 virus.
Although Wiscasset Middle School reported no confirmed cases of the virus, an average 35 students have been absent complaining about flu type sickness.
School officials said people have difficulty distinguishing between what is seasonal flu and what is the more virulent H1N1 flu but they told students and parent the student should stay home if they have flu-like symptoms.
The Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit (RSU) 12 issued a recorded telephone alert to student homes on Thursday advising students to stay home if they have symptoms of flu (fever, aches, and sore throat, which has been specifically associated with the H1N1 variety.
According to the RSU information, none of the Wiscasset schools will be closed at this point, but a planned Student Council trip to Brewer on Monday was been cancelled because of the outbreak at the high school.
