Commissioner of Education Stephen Bowen has given conditional approval to Wiscasset’s proposed agreement to withdraw from Sheepscot Valley RSU 12, according to Department of Education Communications Director Samantha Warren.
Wiscasset has been working on completing an agreement to withdraw from RSU 12 since voters authorized starting the process last June.
Meetings with the RSU’s ad hoc Withdrawal Committee started in December and a draft agreement was approved by the district’s board of directors on May 9.
State statute calls for the RSU 12 board to hold a public hearing on the proposed withdrawal agreement, after which the Withdrawal Committee is required to forward the final agreement to Commissioner of Education Stephen Bowen.
The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. at the Wiscasset Middle School gymnasium, according to Wiscasset Withdrawal Committee Chair Mary Myers.
