The next meeting of the Old Bristol Garden Club will be held Thursday, March 9, at Second Congregational Church, 51 Main St., Newcastle. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a short business discussion and then be followed by a Chewonki Traveling Natural History program on vernal pools.
Vernal pools are beautiful springtime habitats for many amphibians, a safe(ish) place to raise their young aquatic babies before they undergo metamorphosis and transform into land-walking, air-breathing adults.
Participants will learn these species-rich spring pools help support food chains for a variety of animals living in adjacent ecosystems.
Following the program tea and cookies will be served by this month’s tea committee: Holly Emmons, Carol Rice-Dempsey, Susan Bates, and Denise Gordon. All are welcome and new members can join at any time. If local schools are closed due to inclement weather, the garden club meeting is canceled as well.
