You might think a band from Austin, Texas with the word “Cowtown” in its name spends its time off from touring herding cattle at a West Texas ranch or maybe in Nashville writing songs about whiskey and loose women. Not this band. “We recently took a band vacation to the Gypsy Festival at St. Maries de la Mer in the South of France,” says the band’s fiddler and vocalist, Elana James. Whit Smith, Hot Club’s guitar player and vocalist, is a regular at the prestigious Djangofest Northwest on Whidbey Island, Washington, and bass player Jake Erwin has the Hungarian folk band Csokolom in regular rotation on his home stereo. “Our band is fiddle, guitar, and bass, and they can do anything together. We’ve always played a combination of hot jazz and Western swing,” says James, but they can play anything. Artist website: hotclubofcowtown.com. Advance Box Office Tickets $25, Regular Tickets $30.

“Egghead Evenings” take place on various Mondays from 7 – 8:30 p.m. throughout the summer at the Lincoln County Democratic Committee Campaign Office, 521 Main St., Damariscotta. These open discussion groups will focus on policy-related or historical topics featuring experts who live in or frequent Midcoast Maine.
Joseph Rosenbloom, author of Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Last 31 Hours (Beacon Press, 2018), will lead the July 30 discussion. Rosenbloom will be available to sign copies of his newly published book available through most booksellers, including Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shops in Damariscotta and Boothbay Harbor.
King’s reputation as a credible, non-violent leader of the civil rights movement was in jeopardy just as he was launching the Poor Peoples Campaign. Rosenbloom will lead a discussion on the pressures facing King in his final hours, and what happened to his Poor Peoples Campaign as a result.
Rosenbloom is an award-winning journalist who has been a staff reporter for the Boston Globe, an investigative reporter for
Frontline, and a senior editor for Inc. magazine. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, American Prospect, among other publications, and lives in Newton, MA, and summers in Boothbay Harbor.
The Lincoln County Democratic Committee’s Victory 2018 Campaign Office is located in the second floor of the Overlook Building at 521 Main St. in Damariscotta. There is plenty of parking and easy access from the rear of the building located across from Round Top Ice Cream.
