Bigelow Laboratory’s Café Sci is a fun, free way for you to dive into global ocean issues and opportunities with leading scientists, made possible through sponsorship by HM Payson.
As we begin our 50th anniversary celebrations this summer, we’ll spend the 2024 series looking back at key innovations we’ve advanced — and ahead to what they will enable us to accomplish over the next 50 years.
On August 6, to close out the series, Join Dr. Catherine Mitchell will dive into how she uses satellites to understand the global ocean and the ways our climate is changing it.
This summer, Café Sci will take place on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. at The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor from July 16 – August 6. Registration is required and space is limited. Reserve your spot today at bigelow.org/cafesci.

Boothbay Region Historical Society presents:
“Queen Marie Antoinette & Boothbay Area Links to France and Other Places” with Chip Griffin
Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 4:30pm
Venue TBD (Boothbay)
People have long been fascinated with Queen Marie Antoinette’s dramatic 1793 beheading in a white death robe at the guillotine in France. This notoriety has prompted interest in her background and life. But did you know that she also had remarkable connections with Boothbay region sailors and sailing vessels?
In the last talk in our Summer Speaker Series, historian Chip Griffin explores these stories, which include transatlantic shipping and fishing. And of course, this discussion wouldn’t be complete without including the Marie Antoinette house in our own backyard!
This event is free. Donations are greatly appreciated.
Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Garrison Keillor Tonight is an evening of stand-up, storytelling, audience song, and poetry. One man, one microphone. There are sung sonnets, limericks and musical jokes, and the thread that runs through it is the beauty of growing old. There is the News from Lake Wobegon, a town booming with new entrepreneurs, makers of artisanal firewood and gourmet meatloaf, breeders of composting worms, and dogs trained to do childcare. But some things endure, such as the formation of the Living Flag on Main Street, citizens in tight formation wearing red, white or blue caps, and Mr. Keillor among them, standing close to old neighbors, Myrtle Krebsbach (“Truckstop”) and Julie Christensen (“Bruno, The Fishing Dog”) and Clint Bunsen. And an a cappella sing-along with the audience singing from memory an odd medley of patriotic songs, pop standards, hymns, and ending with the national anthem. Garrison Keillor brings his inimitable stories of the places we all know in our heart to the stage tonight. Advance discount tickets $40, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $45 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.

Bluegrass heroes Stillhouse Junkies are on the forefront of breaking through the genre with their free-flowing musical interplay that weaves roots, classical, Texas swing and blues into a high-energy, intricately composed yet expansively improvised tapestry of sound. The trio of close friends Fred Kosak on guitar and mandolin, Cody Tinnin on upright bass, and Alissa Wolf on fiddle are based in the wilderness town of Durango, Colorado. Formed in 2017, the band has released 3 albums, and has new singles due out this year. Their prolific songwriting, 3-part harmonies and outrageous instrumentals saw them bring home the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award “Momentum Band of the Year” in 2021. They have played dozens of
festivals including Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass, Merle Fest and ROMP and gain new fans everyday. Join us tonight for what we think will be one rockin’ and swingin’ and dancin’ night in our great old Opera House. Advance discount tickets $20, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2).
Regular tickets $25 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.
