Sheepscot Chorus invites you to their annual spring concert, “Many Voices, One Dream,” on April 11 and 12, both at 3:00 PM at Damariscotta Baptist Church. On the program will be Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” as well as other works by American composers representing varied cultures and backgrounds.
“Choral music reminds us that many distinct voices can harmonize, creating a shared vision,” says director Linda Blanchard. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th year, this program is an invitation to find the common chords that bind us and to sing for the world we hope to build together.” Nine-year-old soloist Mae McDermott, harpist Melody Lindsay, percussionist Quinn Gormley, and organist Sean Fleming will join the chorus for this exciting event. As a special treat, the winners of this year’s Sheepscot Chorus Student Music Awards will perform, including Rose Campbell from Boothbay Region High School.
In early December 1963, Leonard Bernstein received a letter from the Dean of the Cathedral of Chichester in England, requesting a piece for the Cathedral’s 1965 music festival. The Dean wrote, “Many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of “West Side Story” about the music.” Bernstein composed his “Chichester Psalms” in Hebrew, selecting psalms expressing a plea for peace. Written for chorus and treble soloist, the work uses music that was written for the prologue
of “West Side Story” but was dropped early on. Critic Howard Klein wrote that “Chichester Psalms” was “at once a lovely, enchanting work and a noisy, exciting one.”
The “Many Voices, One Dream” event will include a stirring arrangement of “America the Beautiful,” “Wanting Memories” by long-time Sweet Honey in the Rock member Ysaye Barnwell, and an arrangement of the Georgia Sea Islands spiritual “Yonder Come Day.” The program closes with a rousing arrangement of the multiple award-winning song by Carly Simon “Let the River Run,” a joyful clarion call for hope and transformation.

Ocean on Tap is an informal, ocean-centric speaker series organized by researchers from Bigelow Laboratory. Our goal is to bring people of the community together over the fascinating world of the ocean. At these events, speakers will share their corner of expertise in the ocean, and attendees are encouraged to ask questions.
The next Boothbay Harbor edition of Ocean on Tap is Thursday, April 16, 6pm, at Footbridge Brewery. Dr. Deborah Bronk, president and CEO at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, will be discussing how federal investment in science has fueled unparalleled advances — and what risks are posed by declining support for science amid growing global competition.

Let’s make some delicious, nutritious syrup with my fresh Spring Nettles! This Class will be held Saturday, April. 18th, at 2:00 pm at the Local Batch Kitchen. [right below our store!]
Absolutely one of THE most beneficial wild plants out there, Stinging Nettles are more friend than foe! My favorite way to easily enjoy their benefits is to use them to make a British-style, non-alcoholic Nettle Cordial, similar to an herbal syrup. It has an absolutely delicious & completely unique flavor -– bright & herbal with strong apricot-peach notes.
In this class, I’ll share my personal recipe for the cordial, with both fresh & dried nettle options, as well as some fun ways to enjoy it. We then will cook up a big batch of Cordial together & enjoy a refreshing Nettle Soda crafted with it. Each attendee will leave with a 2 oz bottle of Cordial, a copy of the recipe, a Stinging Nettle monograph, & the know-how. This will be a small group class & very hands on. We are expecting it to run about 1.5 hours long. CLASS SPACE IS LIMITED. This is a PRIVATE EVENT; advance ticket/s must be
purchased.

Embrace the fresh life of spring with a special Yin Yoga workshop!
This is a season when we germinate and grow, tap into courage and curiosity, and embrace new beginnings. To deepen this connection, we’ll explore the element of Wood and how its qualities correspond with springtime. Maya will guide you through meditation, pranayama (breathwork), the liver and gallbladder meridians, and a Yin Yoga practice curated for this time of year.
This workshop is part of a larger series that will meet once a season throughout the year to explore each of the elements.
Meet Your Teacher:
Maya Rook is a certified yoga instructor with nearly 30 years of meditation experience. She received her 200-RYT in 2019, completed additional certifications in Yin Yoga and Yoga with Seniors, and is the creator of Firefly Studio. Maya is passionate about making meditation and yoga practices accessible to everyone, breaking through misconceptions about mindfulness, and helping people connect with the present moment through breath and movement. Her yoga and meditation classes are also supported by her work as a cultural historian and college educator. Participants have described Maya’s approach to Yin Yoga as nurturing, relaxing, and meditative.
What is Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga is a beautiful complement to our more active Yang lifestyles and practices. Here, we slow down and hold poses of stillness, typically for 3-5 minutes, using props to help support us. The intention of a longer hold on a physical level is to stimulate and nourish the connective tissues and fascia. We also work consciously with the breath and the mind-body connection through these poses of relative stillness and cultivation of awareness of sensations that arise. Yin Yoga draws from Daoism and the Five Element Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine as different poses relate to specific organs and meridians in the body, supporting and balancing one’s energy.
