The Jefferson Historical Society is honored to host Justin F. Jackson, Ph.D., assistant professor of history at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., who will give an illustrated talk Saturday, July 15, at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Fire & Rescue Building, 204 Waldoboro Road.
Jackson’s topic will be: “Jefferson at Gettysburg, 160 Years Ago: How One Maine Town Helped Save the Union and Gave it a New Birth of Freedom.” Jackson, formerly of Jefferson is the son of Joan Jackson and the late Fred Jackson. He has researched some of the many Jefferson men who served in that battle.
President Abraham Lincoln noted at his famous address later that year, these Mainers not only saved a democratic government of, by, and for the people, they also helped seal the ultimate defeat of a revolution for slavery.
There will be some displays of photos and items related to the talk.
