The Lincoln County Historical Association is pleased to announce that State Historian Earle Shettleworth will give an illustrated talk on Wiscasset artist Mildred Burrage at the Pownalborough Court House, Dresden, at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday 12 June. Mildred Burrage (1890 – 1983) was one of Maine’s most creative artists. She trained in France, Brittany, Rome and Venice. Her body of work was continually evolving and included a very wide range of subject and substance. Mildred produced historical maps, European landscapes, posters for the U.S. Military, portraits, illustrations for Kenneth Robert’s novels, sculpture, and finally abstract mica paintings inspired by Jackson Pollack. Earle Shettleworth will share his knowledge of Mildred and her family as he shows color slides of many examples from her body of work. Many of these pieces are on exhibit at the Art Gallery at the University of New England, 716 Stevens Ave., Portland through 26 June. (1-5, W., F., Sat., Sun.; 1-7 Th.; free). Mildred and her sister Madeline moved to Wiscasset in 1946. Here they carried on their art. They also became leaders in Maine’s historic preservation efforts. The Lincoln County Historical Association is pleased to say that Mildred was the founder of our organization. It is fitting that this lecture will be delivered in the Court Room, dedicated to Mildred’s memory, in a building that she saved for us and for future generations.
