Alan B. “Curly” Simmons, 80, of Friendship, passed away peacefully July 17 at the Sussman House in Rockport.
Alan was born March 6, 1935 to Alice and Lester Simmons of Friendship. He attended primary school in Friendship, where he lived his entire life, with the exception of the last two years with his daughter in Damariscotta. He spent his childhood on Benner and Allen’s Island until 1952, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served from Sept. 3, 1952 until he was honorably discharged Feb. 27, 1956.
After his service, Alan performed many jobs. He started at Pratt and Whitney, based out of Connecticut, building jet engines, which he worked at from July 1956 through March 1958. In 1958, Alan purchased a lobster boat and began fishing on his own. In his later years, after selling his lobster boat, he did numerous things, such as painting buoys, knitting heads for lobster traps, picking crab meat, and pumping gas on the wharf for boats.
In 1957 Alan married the love of his life, Patricia M. Haskell of Cushing. They spent a wonderful 56 years together, until she passed away in October 2013. They enjoyed dancing, snowmobiling, camping, and playing cribbage and card games. He got great pleasure from being around his family and many close friends. Alan was well known and loved by many.
Alan was predeceased by wife, Patricia Simmons; parents, Alice and Lester Simmons; brother, Bernard Simmons; and sister, Esther Carter.
He is survived by daughters, Angela Powell and Barry Knott of Damariscotta, and Sheila Ackley of Warren; grandchildren, Gregory Powell of Friendship, Rebecca and husband Travis Flaherty of Warren, Samantha Ackley of Cambridge, Md., and Stephen Ackley of Warren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
