Alan Gerald Smith, 61, of Newcastle, died suddenly on April 3 at home, after a long struggle with multiple medical problems. He was born in Gary, Ind. in 1946 and graduated in 1964 from Andrean High School, then graduated from St. Joseph’s College in 1969. From there he moved to Bloomington, Ind. where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. He was a teacher at Miller School and others in the northwest Indiana area. Ultimately, he made Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. his home for 17 years and worked at a private academy tutoring children with learning disabilities, as well as an extended period doing social work with children and the elderly as clients.
In 1993 he moved to Portland, and attended St. Dominic’s Church where he also worked part-time, and volunteered at the food pantry in Portland. In 1996, he relocated to Bristol Mills, and then in 2000 he moved to Newcastle. He loved birds and wildlife around his home and cared attentively to the grounds around his home. He also enjoyed bird watching, identifying local mushrooms and caring for his three cats. He especially loved watching the abundant wild turkeys. Alan was a gentle soul, loved by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his father, Gerald L. Smith, and a brother, Brent D. Smith.
He is survived by his mother, Lorraine E. Smith of Newcastle; sister, Jennifer S. Smith of Newcastle; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Smith of Northport, Fla.; as well as many nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle. Services will be private and Mass will be held at a later date.
