Captain Albert R. Thorpe, 76, of Port Charlotte, Fla. and South Bristol, passed away Oct. 1 after a brief illness.
Albert was born in Damariscotta, a son of Richard and Lizzie Thorpe of South Bristol. Albert married Nancy Prentice in Bristol in 1957. Albert and Nancy had two children.
As a young boy Albert lobstered out of his skiff. He was 15 when his father passed away. Albert then took over his father’s job aboard the Sandra Lee fishing with Henry Jones until he joined the Army in 1953. During this time in the Army Albert served overseas. Upon his discharge he returned to Maine and resumed his fishing career. He and Nancy also owned and operated Topo’s Market in South Bristol.
Albert was the captain of several vessels including the Nancy Lee, Brant, Amy Jo and The Foxy Lady. He retired in 1988 and moved to Florida and began a lawn care service. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and grandson, William.
Albert also thoroughly enjoyed growing plants in his hydrophobic garden until his death.
Albert is survived by children, Richard and Amy Jo Thorpe, both of Port Charlotte, Fla.; grandchildren, Keith and Kami Thorpe of Maine and sidekick and special buddy, William Raphial of Port Charlotte, Fla.; great-grandson, Talin Thorpe of Maine; brother, Robert Reed (Pam); special cousins, Chester and David Rice who always supplied Albert and Nancy with delicious seafood and clambakes, and many other family and friends.
At his request and the request of the family there was no service.
