Alice A. Ellis, 96, of Damariscotta, passed away at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home on Dec. 4. Born on Jan. 13, 1912, in Ithaca, N.Y., she was the daughter of Frank and Alice (Hobart) Hallenbeck, and one of nine children.
Alice lived in upstate New York until her husband, Francis D. Ellis, took a job in Pittsburgh, Penn. She spent her adult years in the Pittsburgh area. For many of those years she was a beloved volunteer at the Sunrise School in Monroeville, a school for mentally and physically disabled children. Alice moved to Damariscotta in 1997, shortly after her daughter and son-in-law retired to Maine.
Alice was predeceased by her husband in 1970 and her son, Brian J. Ellis, in 1996.
She is survived by two brothers, Byron Hallenbeck of Manchester, Conn., and Earl Hallenbeck of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughter, Patricia Spock and son-in-law, William Spock of Brunswick; son, Carl H. Ellis and daughter-in-law, Katherine Ellis of Dayton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Alice’s friends and acquaintances are invited to reminisce about Alice over tea and Christmas cookies at Cove’s Edge, 3-5 p.m., Wed., Dec. 17.
Her family has entrusted arrangements to the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
