Alice Anita Travis Bowden, 80, of Jefferson, passed away with her loving family by her side on Sept. 23 at Hawthorne House in Freeport. She was born Aug. 30, 1935 in Bath to John “Jack” Travis and Lucy Elizabeth Jones.
Alice attended schools in Bath and Rockland. She worked at Auerbach Shoe Factory in Brunswick for many years. She also waitressed at the Miss Brunswick Diner where she met Charles Bowden. They were married on April 26, 1974 in Damariscotta. After their marriage she enjoyed being a housewife.
She was a member of the DePatsy’s Candlepin Bowling League, she loved dancing and singing to country music; she was a Darryl Waltrip and Tony Stewart NASCAR fan, and loved going to Daytona 500, was an avid Red Sox fan, and loved cats, knitting and crocheting.
She lived in Florida during the winter for 25 years. Her favorite times were with family and friends. Everyone she met became an immediate friend. She especially loved arranging family get-togethers on the 4th of July.
She was predeceased by her parents, Jack Travis and Lucy Thorne; step-brother, Philip Reno; aunt, Mena; and favorite cat, Trixie.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Charles Bowden of Jefferson; daughters, Sharon Phipps and husband Charles of Topsham, and Elizabeth Hokanson and husband Clark of Brunswick; stepdaughter, Linda Elwell and husband Frank of Waldoboro; stepson, Michael Bowden of Jefferson; sisters, Marie “Bunny” Varian and husband Mickey of Sebasco, Lucy “Dolly” Stackpole and husband Frank of Gardiner, and Wendy Thorne of Woolwich; brother, John Travis and wife Kathy of West Bath; stepsister, Helen Reno Pushard of Bath; grandchildren, John Phipps and girlfriend Beth Kallio of Richmond, Shannon Hokanson Fuller and husband Scott of Brunswick, Regina Phipps McCarren and husband Geoff of Woolwich, Shylah Hokanson and boyfriend Joseph Haggerty of Brunswick, Greg Bowden of Rockland, Kyle Bowden of Winthrop, and Cassidy Bowden of Whitefield; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tues., Oct. 6 at Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro followed by interment at the Rural Cemetery with a reception at the Waldoboro American Legion.
