Alvin G. Bryant, 69, of Damariscotta, passed away on the evening of Memorial Day, May 25. Born on June 17, 1945 in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of Guilford and Ida (Chickering) Bryant. He moved to Bunker Hill in Newcastle at just a few months old where he spent his childhood, until graduating from Lincoln Academy as part of the class of 1963.
After graduating from high school, Al married and started his family and carpentry career. He worked for Richard R. Storer and Sons for 23 years, and considered Richard his best friend; always calling him “pa” or “the old man.” Together they built many of the large schools throughout the State of Maine, as well as many other impressive buildings. Alvin went on the hunting trip of his life with Richard to Newfoundland, where he brought home a moose. Al claimed it was the only meat his first daughter, Melissa, would ever eat.
Al had many cherished memories of great hunting and fishing trips with his favorite brothers-in-law, with many tales to tell – some legal, and some not so legal. Later in life, Al took up a new hobby, riding Harleys! He took several trips across the country, and enjoyed many sights that most of us will never see. His prized Harley was purple with pearl.
Al’s health declined at a young age, “too young,” as some would say, but his legacy will live on. He will be remembered for his great laugh and smile, and for doing things his way, and his way only, right up until his last day on earth.
Alvin was predeceased by a son, Timothy in 1964; mother, Ida E. Chickering Bryant in 2002; and father, Guilford L. Bryant in 2011.
He is survived by his former wife, and mother of his children, Lorraine Huntley Murray; daughters, Melissa Bryant of Phippsburg, and Annette Farrin and Al’s beloved son-in-law, Brian Farrin of Walpole; beloved and cherished granddaughter, Gretchen Farrin; brother, Paul Bryant of Nobleboro; sister, Sylvia Frey and husband Jack of Newcastle; as well as many cousins and nieces and nephews.
A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Sat., May 30 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alvin’s memory may be made to a Chocolate Lab rescue or the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
