Arlene W. Burns, 91, a longtime resident of Nobleboro, passed away on the evening of Jan. 9 in Augusta with her family by her side. Born on Dec. 12, 1920 in Waldoboro, she was the daughter of Millard and Ruth (Studley) Winchenbach.
Arlene grew up on a dairy farm in Waldoboro and attended schools there. She went on to graduate from Waldoboro High School, and then attended the Ballard School of Business. She worked at the Nobleboro Central School as a librarian and teacher’s aid for over 20 years.
Arlene loved to work with her hands. She braided rugs when she was younger, and as a member of the Clamshell Quilters, enjoyed quilting all of her life. She was very active in the Nobleboro Baptist Church and was a member there for many years.
Together with her husband, the late Keith Burns, she traveled to many different locations. She and Keith took trips to many places, including Colorado, Texas, Puerto Rico and Italy. She loved to dance, and for many years, she and Keith were members of the Sage Swingers Square Dancers of Brunswick. They wintered in Seminole, Fla. for over 25 years. She loved feeding and watching the birds, watching game shows and doing crossword puzzles.
Besides her husband and parents; she was predeceased by siblings, Vergil Winchenbach, Elsie Martin, Earl Winchenbach, Rodney Winchenbach and Faye Winchenbach.
She is survived by children, Ellen Wheeler and husband Dick, Keith Burns Jr. and wife Darlene, and Pam Hardy and husband Ron; brother, Roy Winchenbach; grandchildren, Mark Keast, Heather Keast, Richard Burns, Rodney Burns, Ryan Burns, Rachel Bailey, Jennifer Elwell, and Chris Hardy; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Time of visitation 12-1 p.m., Sat., Jan. 14 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Funeral will follow at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Dunbar Cemetery following the service.
