Arthur Fogg Spear Jr., “Buster”, 80, passed away peacefully on March 22 at his home. He was born on Feb. 9, 1931 in Hopewell, Va. Arthur was the son of the late Arthur F. and Florence “Netta” Spear and lived in North Quincy, Mass. until he moved to Wilmington, Mass. in the summer of 1945.
Arthur graduated from Wilmington High School in 1949, during high school he played varsity football, baseball, and basketball, becoming a star athlete. Arthur was inducted into the Wilmington High School Hall of Fame on Jan. 18, 1992.
He enlisted into the Army Air Force in September of 1949, serving honorably for four years.
Arthur attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, graduating as a Civil Engineer in 1958.
He married his high school sweetheart Margery Ann Bedell on Aug. 4, 1951.
Arthur served on the Wilmington Finance Committee for many years, he was a Wilmington Youth Hockey coach and referee, and was the “Grand Marshall” for the 1st Annual Horribles Parade.
Arthur retired in 1990 from TRW Industries in Cambridge, Mass.
Arthur loved spending time with his family and the many friends that they made at their home in Round Pond.
Arthur is survived by his beloved wife, Margery A. (Bedell) Spear; daughters, Evelyn L. Haberland and husband Jay L. Haberland, Leslie A. Plouffe, Elisabeth E. Spear and Melissa B. Spear; grandchildren, Cpt. John B. Haberland and wife Laura, Sarah E. Writer and husband Evan, Thomas G. Plouffe and Mark E. Haberland; and great-granddaughter, Isobel Ann Haberland. Arthur was the brother of Celia F. Cornish and her husband Robert B., Frank A. Spear and his late wife Shirley F., and the late Florence S. LePore and her husband Peter LePore, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at the Wilmington Congregational Church, 220 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, Mass. 11 a.m., Sat., April 2.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Arthur’s name may be made to the Wilmington Congregational Church.
