Arthur John Wylie, 71, of Nobleboro, died suddenly Jan. 1 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland with his family at his side.
Arthur was born July 10, 1939 in Damariscotta, the son of John Forrest and Laura Frances Seiders Wylie, and attended South Bristol schools and Castner School in Damariscotta.
Encouraged to work at an early age, he left school early, and began a lifelong hard work ethic that he became well known for. He began working at the Round Top Farm in Damariscotta as a field hand, and was also employed by many local contractors in town, including Hatch Well Drillers and Gallants Well Drillers, and drove trucks for O.W. Holmes.
Active in the community, Arthur was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nobleboro and served on the diaconate board, was a life member of the Nobleboro Fire Department, joining in 1960, and serving as its Fire Chief from 1981 to 1983. He was remembered as someone who would always be ready to help a friend in need, there was nothing he could not fix or repair, and loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents; stepfather, Henry Simmons; and brother, Daniel Wylie.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Chandler Wylie; daughters, Lori-Ann Wylie Sylvester and husband Kip, and Rebecca Wylie and boyfriend Danny Murphy of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Justin Sylvester of Nobleboro, Jessica Sylvester and boyfriend Cameron Prock of Jefferson, and Conor Glasier of Nobleboro; brothers, Robert Wylie and wife Reba of Newport News, Va., Donny Wylie and wife Betty, and Henry Simmons and wife Dawn, all of Boothbay; sisters, Elaine Sorrells and husband Ronald, and Diane Dube and husband Peter, all of Augusta, and Louise Lewis and husband Wendell of Rockland; sister-in-law, Kathy Wylie of Illinois; many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Victoria Chandler of Nobleboro; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Seiders of Nobleboro.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 6 with a brief prayer service at 7:45 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Graveside service 2:30 p.m., Fri., Jan. 7 at the Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro. With the expectation of snow, friends are invited to go directly to the family gathering at Mary Guptil’s home, 472 Upper East Pond Rd., Nobleboro, where the family will gather after the service.
