Arthur L. Welsh, 75, of State College, Penn., and a long-time summer resident of Damariscotta, died Aug. 12, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born June 28, 1931 in Yatesboro, Penn., he was the youngest son of Scottish immigrants, John and Agnes Benson Welsh.
During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Navy on board the destroyer U.S.S. Leary.
He received a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Economics from the University of Illinois.
Throughout his long and successful academic career, he worked at the Joint Council for Economic Education in New York City, and taught economics at the University of Iowa, Indiana University and Penn State, retiring in 1995. In his retirement, he enjoyed travel, golf, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Wawenock Golf Club.
He is survived by one son, Robert C. Welsh of Verona, N.J. and wife Suzanne; two daughters, Margaret E. Welsh of Los Angeles, Cal. and husband Michael Higgins, and Janet A. Welsh of State College, Penn.; six grandchildren, Collin and Catherine Welsh of Verona, N.J.; William and Tatiana Welsh of State College, Penn., and Maisie and Walter Higgins of Los Angeles, Cal.; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Rubio of Beckley, W. Va.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lorrain Welsh of West Clarksville, N.Y.; additionally, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorial service in celebration of his life will be held in October in State College, Penn.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
