Barbara (Brown) Roundy, of West Bath, died Jan. 10 at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta. She was born in West Bath in 1917, the daughter of Walter and Madelyn (Hunt) Brown, and attended West Bath schools and Morse High School, from which she graduated as salutatorian.
A descendant of Mayflower passengers John and Priscilla Alden, Barbara was a true Yankee, splitting her girlhood years between an in-town residence in Bath and a beloved saltwater farm in West Bath, surrounded by six siblings.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1939. She lived with her husband, George Roundy of Walpole, Mass., in Louisiana during the Second World War, and then for many years in Walpole, Mass. before moving to Camden in 1960. Upon his death in 1981, she returned to West Bath to live with her sister, Ruth Hennessey, remaining until moving to Damariscotta in 2005. She attended the United Church of Christ in Bath. Barbara is remembered for her love of reading and opera, her generosity of spirit with everyone who encountered her, and the high ethical standards she taught her children.
Barbara is survived by her sister, Ruth Hennessey of West Bath; brother, John Brown of Bryans Road, Md.; children, Jean McDonald of Whitney Point, N.Y., Ruth Vietze of Alna, Anne Roundy of Alna, Charles Roundy of Winnsboro, S.C., David Roundy of West Bath and George Roundy of Tacoma, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and multiple dearly loved nieces and nephews.
