Barry S. Belyea, 68, passed away on May 17 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born in Portland on July 24, 1946, son of Stephen W. and Louise (Young) Belyea of Gorham. Growing up Barry spent countless hours at his grandfather’s farm in Gorham. He also worked in Falmouth at his dad’s foreign car business.
Barry was a 1964 graduate of Gorham High School and a 1968 graduate of Gorham State Teacher’s College – now USM. He also earned his master’s degree. Cross-country running and track were a passion of his, earning him a spot in the USM Huskies Sports Hall of Fame in March 1992. He was also inducted into Gorham High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He was employed by MSAD #40 from 1968-2003 as a Social Studies teacher, then Principal at A.D. Gray School.
Barry loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and sports. He spent summers painting and taking care of residences in the Waldoboro area.
Barry is survived by his daughters of Waldoboro, Erica Crosby and significant other Scott Martin, Jessica Sproul and husband Paul, and Lynsey Ward and significant other Todd Johnston; grandchildren, Noah, Arianna, Devon, Richie, Maddie, and Josh; brother, Glenn Belyea and wife Maryanne of Bath, Mich.; sister, Brenda Willlis and husband Larry of Brewer; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and childhood sweetheart and recent companion, Lynn Hillman Furstrand of Portland.
To honor Barry’s wishes a private graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland.
