Barry W. “Gus” Knott, Sr., 73, of Damariscotta, entered into rest early on the morning of April 28 at Miles Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.
Born in Damariscotta on June 17, 1933, he was the son of George and Marjorie (West) Plante. He attended public schools in Damariscotta, graduating from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1951.
On October 31 of that year, Gus entered the U.S. Navy. He served honorably for eight years, with much of that time onboard the USS Johnston during the Korean War.
Following his discharge, Gus returned to Damariscotta where he worked for several months at Round Top Farms. In April of 1956, he began his career at Colby and Gale, purchasing the business with Jim Phillips in 1978. On April 1, 1993 he retired after 37 loyal years.
Active throughout his life in the community, Gus was a member and past Master of the Alna-Anchor Lodge, AF & AM, the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club, the Wells-Hussey Post American Legion, the Maine Oil Dealers Association, and the Damariscotta Historical Society. He was active for many years with the NRA, enjoying numerous black powder outings with his father. He was a member and past Chief of the Massasoit Fire Company in Damariscotta, as well as a member of the Colby & Gale Oil Rangers bowling team, and the Wawenock Country Club.
Upon retirement, Gus enjoyed traveling in his motor home, making many trips to the Fryeburg Fair as well as touring northern Maine. He also enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren and many friends. Gus was always open to a lively discussion.
He leaves his loving wife of 49 years, Anne (Wallace) Knott of Damariscotta and his mother, Marjorie, both of Damariscotta; children, Barry W Knott, Jr. and companion Angie Powell of Damariscotta, Cynthia K. Clifford and husband Robert of Walpole, Dean W. Knott and wife Bonnie of Damariscotta, and Elaine M. Poland and husband David of Damariscotta; grandchildren, Nicholas, Olivia and Arielle Clifford, Devan, Jordan and Kamryn Knott, and Ryan and Cody Poland; and step grandson, Dustin Creamer.
Friends are invited to be with the family 6-8 p.m., Thurs., May 3 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
Service to honor Gus’s life 11 a.m., Fri., May 4 at Lakehurst, Egypt Rd., Damariscotta, where a reception will follow.
Private graveside ceremony will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
