Bernice A. Reed, 87, of Waldoboro, slipped away peacefully, with her family at her side Sept. 19 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, after a brief illness.
Bernice was born in Waldoboro July 5, 1922, the daughter of William and Mildred Walter. She attended the Waldoboro schools and in October 1940 she married John “Eddie” Reed. She worked at various jobs in the area, Sylvania, the Hoods Plant, Medomak Canning Company and the Button Factory, while raising her six children.
Bernice was a member of the Maple Grange. She was also a founding member of the Lend a Hand Club in North Waldoboro and the Waldoboro Snow Crawlers. She loved the outdoors and could in younger years be found snow shoeing or cross country skiing with her friend Marguerite Shuman. She attended both the Methodist Church and the Church of the Nazarene, and she loved to hear the many singing groups that came there.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and loved to cook for her family and friends. She was well noted for her yeast rolls and pies as well as her Saturday night bean suppers.
Bernice was predeceased by her sister, Madelyn Lewis, of Waldoboro.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, John; daughters, Donna Richardson and husband Butch of Cumberland, Elaine Johnston and husband Ralph of Waldoboro, and Cindy Stover and husband Leslie of Scarborough; sons, John, Jr. and wife Sharrie of Gray, Arnold and wife Karen, of Jefferson, and Jamie and partner Judy Cooper of Waldoboro; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many cousins; and a niece and nephew who often visited with her.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Tues., Sept. 22 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of life service honoring Bernice 2 p.m., Wed., Sept. 23 at Hall Funeral Home with the Rev. Dorr officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in Waldoboro.
