Carol S. Schell, of Nobleboro, passed away on Aug. 19 surrounded by her family at Central Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born on March 27, 1933, Carol was the daughter of Raymond and Alma Stockner of Princeton, W. Va. In 1954, Carol graduated from Queen’s College in Charlotte, N.C. and later attended graduate school at Duke University embarking on a career as a clinical psychologist.
On Aug. 16, 1956 in Welch, W. Va. she married Erwin Haskell Schell Jr., MD, eventually settling in Norwich, Vt. where they raised three sons Krist, Daniel, and Robert.
Carol spent 30 years in Norwich, where she was involved in community organizations and worked in the English Department at Hanover High School. In 1990, Carol and her husband moved from their Vermont home of 30 years to Nobleboro. For the next 25 years, Carol contributed to the community through several organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Coast Maine, a program dedicated to helping youth develop life confidence and high aspirations through educational success. She worked at the Lincoln County Weekly on the Entertainment Section and The Lincoln County News. She also regularly served as a substitute teacher at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.
One of Carol’s greatest joys was music and community theater. She energetically pursued these interests for years acting as producer and prop coordinator for numerous plays. She served as a board member of the Lincoln County Community Theater and The Theater of the Spirit. For many years Carol also performed with The Tapestry Singers of Damariscotta.
For the past six years, with great joy and delight, Carol co-founded and served as vice president and producer of Hearts Ever Young, Inc., a theatrical troupe of seasoned adults, ranging from age 65 to 90 years and beyond. With her extensive background in writing, Carol produced original scripts incorporating popular songs dance and comedy for H.E.Y. performances. Carol furthered the H.E.Y. belief that the process of aging brings with it an increased perception, understanding, tolerance, joy, and knowledge of our world and its people in all its variety.
Carol’s social and political conscience coupled with her love of home, gardening, literature, and current events made her a friend to many. She sought to strengthen people and communities through bringing them together in the celebration of music and theater. She has touched an endless number of lives over the years by simply sharing the joy of her passions, her heart ever young.
She was predeceased by her husband, Haskell, in 1991.
She is survived by sons, Krist, wife Dana and their children Saralinda and Robert Daniel of Kentucky, Daniel of Massachusetts, and Robert, wife Joy and their children Nicholas, Michael and Ashleigh of Vermont; sister, Mary Kate of Charlottesville, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
