Carroll James Sproul, 74, of Boothbay, known by all who knew and loved him as Jim, died June 10 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor after a period of failing health.
Jim was born Dec. 6, 1935 in Gardiner, the son of Carroll B. and Elizabeth Sewall Sproul. He grew up in Wiscasset, attending Wiscasset High School.
Jim married the love of his life Christine Dickinson in 1956, and together made their home in Boothbay.
A longtime state employee, he worked for the Maine D.O.T as a heavy equipment operator for 42 years, based in the Edgecomb garage, retiring in 1995. Most recently, he worked for the town of Boothbay for the past five years.
A workaholic, when he wasn’t working for the state, he was never idle, he loved restoring the McCobb Farm, found great enjoyment in driving his truck, attended the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church where he served as Sr. Youth Leader and was always ready to help a friend with a project.
Jim and Chris had a marvelous trip to Alaska in 1983, visiting classmate Faith Anne and family in Kenai, fishing and touring the state from Prudhoe Bay, Barrow, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Homer, Valdez and Whittier. It was the trip of a lifetime, following the pipeline from Prudhoe to Valdez.
He is predeceased by brothers, George Sproul and Sam Sproul and sister, Dot Townsend.
Jim is survived by his wife Chris Sproul of Boothbay; son, Michael Sproul of Boothbay; daughter Jackie Sproul of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Katherine Connors, and precious grandchildren, Adam and Erica Sproul both of Boothbay.
Graveside service 10 a.m., Sat., June 19 at the Hillside Cemetery, Rt. 27, Boothbay.
