Cathryn (Katy) Elizabeth Shevlin, of Dresden, passed away on Dec. 1 at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation.
Kate was born in Dresden on May 9, 1924, and grew up in Dresden and Portland. She was the daughter of Bernice Woodward Shevlin of Dresden and Vincent James Shevlin of Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from the Gorham State Teachers College in 1946 and was awarded a Masters of Arts degree from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1961.
After brief teaching assignments in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut, Kate joined the Cleveland Heights school system in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, teaching elementary school until retiring in 1977. She always returned to Dresden to spend summers, and after her retirement she returned to Dresden to live.
In her retirement years Kate volunteered with several organizations. She was active in the Voluntary Service Program of the Veterans Administration at Togus Veterans Hospital, drove for the Meals on Wheels program, and for 18 years was a volunteer of the Kennebec Valley Medical Center.
Kate was predeceased by sisters, Eunice Schager, and Geraldine Shevlin Swenson; and brother, Vincent Shevlin Jr.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Catherine Dudley of Matawan, N.J., Margaret Susor of Oregon, Ohio, Richard Schager of Brooklyn, N.Y., Marilyn Baker of Mentor, Ohio, and Vincent Schager of Kennesaw, Ga.; 10 grand-nieces and nephews; and nine great-grand-nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 5 at Christ Church, 2 Dresden Ave., Gardiner.
