Col. Howard W. Spence, 93, died Sept. 21 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. Prior to his short stay at Cove’s Edge, he resided at Chase Point Assisted Living. When his second wife, Peggy, died in 2005, he decided to move to Maine to be closer to his daughter, Betsy. Up until his death, he couldn’t figure out why he left sunny San Antonio, Tex. to move to Maine in November.
He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in Bhutan and India. After he retired from the Army, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps where he worked at the National Institutes of Health. Upon his retirement, he and his first wife, Betty, moved to Texas.
He was predeceased by his first wife Betty and his second wife Peggy; as well as his parents.
Howard is survived by daughter, Betsy Spence of Sheepscott; sister, Ruth Jacquemin of Peague, Tex.; adopted daughter, Susan Day of Sheepscott; and many nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be interred on Thurs., Sept. 30 at the National Cemetery at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Tex. At his request there will be no service.
