Corinne “Corky” Denis, 88, passed away on Jan. 24 at Cove’s Edge, Damariscotta. Corky was born on July 22, 1926 in Nobleboro to Viva Parker, and was adopted by Thomas Steen when Viva Parker and he were married two years later. Corinne married Aldrich Denis at the age of 45.
In 1943-45, Corky was very active with the USO in New York City. She was also general manager for telephone services for the Sullivan and Cromwell Law Office in New York City. When in Maine, she settled in Jefferson, lived in a log cabin and was an avid reader. She loved to cook, can, and made her own hats which she enjoyed wearing with various outfits.
Corky was a loyal patron of the local library system, was active in the First Baptist Church, and enjoyed her family visits.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, George Davis Steen, and Thomas Walter Steen; and great-nephew, Tyler Steen.
Her survivors include brother, William Steen of Venice, Fla.; sister, Linda Rose of Clark Summit, Penn.; nieces, Cynthia Petti and husband Louis of Cape Cod, Mass., and Suzanne Steen of Melrose, Mass.; nephews, John B. Steen of Las Vegas, Nev., and Thomas J. Steen and wife Tina of Simsbury, Conn.; and great-nieces and nephews, Jessica Munro, Shannon Munro, Ryan Steen, and Corey Steen.
A spring graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Sun., May 10 at Fairview Cemetery, Jefferson, with Pastor Bob Bellows officiating.
