Daniel Carl Tibbetts, 68, of Windsor, died on Dec. 3 after a brief battle with brain cancer.
Dan was born on June 18, 1946 in Gardiner to Donald and Beatrice Tibbetts. He grew up in Whitefield on the family dairy farm.
Dan received an associate’s degree from Vermont Technical College in 1967 and then went on to study Animal Science at the University of Maine at Orono where he received his bachelor’s degree. Dan then spent five years teaching agriculture at Lee Academy in Lee.
He bought the Little Reed Farm in Windsor in 1973 and worked as a dairy farmer until his death. He transitioned to an organic operation in 2006 and shipped his milk first to Stonyfield and then to Organic Valley. He was featured in a documentary “Meet Your Farmer” by New England Film and Maine Farmland Trust.
Dan enjoyed watching and coaching sports, and was once a racquetball enthusiast as well as a basketball referee. He also enjoyed caring for animals and spending time with loved ones.
He is survived by his sisters, Barbara, Roxanne and Marjorie; brothers, Barry and Dwight; children, Adelle, Andrea and Todd from his first marriage to Karen Keen, and Camilo, Mercedes and Daniel from his second marriage to Sandra Pardo; and grandchildren, Sophia, Tucker, Taisen, Sawyer, and Griffin, as well as one due in February.
Dan will be remembered for his dry humor, his commitment to community and family, and his love of sports and sweets.
Visiting hours will be held at 8:30 a.m., Sat., Dec. 6 at Plummer Funeral Home in Windsor with a service at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be given in the name of Mercedes and Daniel’s College Fund at Kennebec Savings Bank in Augusta.
Dan will be buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Windsor at the corner of the Reed Road and Route 32 in the spring.
