Diane M. Hathorne, 75, of Wiscasset, died on May 30 at Boothbay Green in Boothbay.
She was born in Bath on June 21, 1939, a daughter of Frank and Evangeline (Miller) Sparks Jr. She attended Woolwich schools and in 1956 graduated from Morse High School in Bath. In 1939 she won the prettiest baby in Bath awarded by The Bath Daily Times of which she was very proud.
On Aug. 30, 1957 she married Leon Hathorne and they resided in Wiscasset. She was employed by the Department of Human Services. She raised their family and was known as “Sarge.” She was the tax collector for the Town of Wiscasset for 14 years, retiring in 1989.
Diane was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Wiscasset and a member of the Female Charitable in Wiscasset.
She enjoyed, gardening, reading, feeding birds, the ocean, and especially loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon M. Hathorne on June 12, 2005; and by her brother, Michael Sparks.
She is survived by daughters, Holly Mills and husband Robert of Prospect, Jill Moody and fiancé Matthew Huber of Wiscasset, and Jayne Lewis and husband Richard of Boothbay; brother, Frank Sparks of West Bath; nephews, Andrew Sparks and Franklin Sparks; grandchildren, Shannon Moody and fiancé Joey Brown, Katie Goodenow and husband Gregory, Abbie Hayward and husband Kyle, Rebecca Moody and fiancé Colton Thayer, and Ashley Reis and husband Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Noah Haggett, Emma Goodenow, Max Goodenow, and Stephen Goodenow.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Thurs., June 4 at Riverside Cemetery in Woolwich. A gathering of family and friends will follow at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall in Wiscasset.
