Donald C. Campbell, 56, of Waldoboro, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 5 on the island of Matinicus. He was born in Damariscotta on Nov. 16, 1954, the son of Clyde and Ada Smalley Campbell. He grew up in Waldoboro, attended local schools and was a graduate of Medomak Valley High School class of 1973.
After high school he joined the U.S. Army in which he served for 21 years, serving seven and a half months in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm and retired in 1993. While with the Army he met and married his wife Robyn in 1982. The couple settled in Savannah, Ga., then to Fort Riley and then to Germany where they had their daughter Beth in 1992. After retiring from the Army, the family moved to Maine.
From a very young age Don wanted nothing more than to fly like his father who was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. At the age of 16 he had his shirt tail cut, a ritual performed after successful completion of a pilot’s first solo flight. After that the sky was the limit. After retiring from the Army, Don received his private pilot’s license and then eventually his commercial pilot’s license, working for Penobscot Island Air where he would fly charters to and from Matinicus. When he wasn’t flying, he could usually be found at the hangers with his friends of the Knox County Flying Club, especially with his good friends Dan and Dick. Or he could be found on his Harley Davidson Electra Glide riding with the Star Club of Portland.
He was a family man and loved spending time with them.
Survivors include his loving wife of 28 years, Robyn Campbell of Waldoboro; daughter, Beth Campbell of Waldoboro; parents, Clyde and Ada Campbell of Waldoboro; brothers-in-law, Larry Hall and wife Lynn of Rincon, Ga. and Tommy Hall and wife Cara of Garden City, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Barbara Bowles of Rincon, Ga. and Kathy Allred of Bloomingdale, Ga.; and beloved Golden Retriever, Cali.
