Donald E. Hutchins Sr., 69, of Edgecomb, died Oct. 17 at Maine Medical Center in Portland in the company of members of his loving family.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1939, a son of Thomas and Leila (Davis) Hutchins. He was raised on an Edgecomb dairy farm which had been in his family for generations. He spent his retirement years preserving it to honor his father’s devotion to the land.
He attended Edgecomb and Wiscasset schools and graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1958 where he was a gifted baseball player. On the baseball diamond he was a pitcher with the potential to play the game professionally but whose destiny was to work and raise a family in the Mid Coast area. He was employed at Bath Iron Works retiring in 1995 after a 32 year career as a pipe fitter and supervisor.
He was the superintendent of the North Edgecomb Cemetery.
His twin passions were golf and the Boston Red Sox.
He is survived by his wife Bertha Hutchins of Edgecomb; three daughters, Doreen Beaulieu of Wiscasset, Kelley Lester and husband Vic Churchill of Westport Island and Mirinda Schaumberg and husband Karl of Bath; two sons, Donald Hutchins Jr. and wife Gigi of Whitefield and Thomas Hutchins and wife Darcie of Alna; brother, Irving Campbell of Boothbay; two step-daughters, Kellie Oakes and husband John of Westport Island and Katie Leuang and husband Ben of Sarasota, Fla.; former spouse, Joan Kaler of Wiscasset; eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Sat., Oct. 25 at the Edgecomb Congregational Church with Rev. Tom Cluff officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at the North Edgecomb Cemetery.
