Edna J. McLain, 82, of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 4. Edna was born on Aug. 3, 1932 in Portage Lake, the daughter of the late Moses A. and Carrie (Gallop) McNally.
When she was 12 years old, the family moved to Waldoboro. Edna attended local schools and was a graduate of Waldoboro High School class of 1949, and she recently attended her 65th class reunion. After school she went on to beauty school and upon graduating opened her own shop Edna’s Beauty Salon in Waldoboro, a shop that she would run for 50 years before retiring.
Edna was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro, first attending church when the family moved to Waldoboro. Edna was baptized at the church, taught Sunday school for many years, volunteered in the nursery during services, led prayer groups and Bible studies, and was a choir member as well.
Edna knew how to have fun but only after all of her work was done. Edna was a social butterfly and loved having people at her house and taking trips to visit her many friends in the area. Her family always remembers her homemade beans and yeast rolls every Saturday night. Edna loved music and could be found humming a tune everywhere she went; you knew Edna was somewhere in the area when you heard her familiar humming.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert L. McLain; son-in-law, Robert Burnham; sister, Louisa Gould; brother, Willard McNally; sister-in-law, Bernice McNally; brothers-in-law, Leo Gould, Benjamin Smith, Arvid Olson, Warren Poland, and Phil Howes; and nephews, Dwight Howes, Wayne McNally, and Michael Poland.
She is survived by her children, Deborah J. Smith and husband Gary of Waldoboro, Dianne E. Burnham of Waldoboro, and Scott M. McLain and fiancée Christine Brann of Friendship; grandchildren, Troy S. Smith and wife Bonnie of Waldoboro, Karri E. Berry and husband Tim of Waldoboro, Elizabeth Swett and husband Tyler of Waldoboro, Caitlin Brann of Friendship, Raymond Brann of Friendship, and Jonathan Brann of Friendship; great-grandchildren, Catherina Robinson, Carter Robinson, Aria Robinson, Audrey Swett, Brooke McFarland, Alyssa Smith, Julia Smith, and Isaac Berry, all of Waldoboro; siblings, Ada Howes of Randolph, Fred McNally of Waldoboro, Ethel Olson of Big Lake, Alaska, Elizabeth Poland of Bremen, and Sandra Smith of South Gardiner; and sisters-in-law, Roberta McNally of Pittsburg, N.H., Eva McLain of Waldoboro, Celia Ramsdell of Gardiner, Hilda Parlin of Waldoboro, and Elsie Orff and husband Arvine of Brandford, Conn.
