Elizabeth Mary Leibman, 91, of Waldoboro, died on June 19 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta after a sudden brief illness. She was born on April 20, 1923 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Elizabeth (Lang) and Charles Leibman. She lived in Jamaica, N.Y. until 1941. Elizabeth graduated from high school, School of Industrial Arts, Manhattan, N.Y. in 1941.
On Dec. 7, 1943, she joined the Navy and was a WAVE in WWII. She was stationed in Washington, D.C. processing war photos. She was discharged from the Navy, Jan. 16, 1946 as a Specialist 3rd Class.
Elizabeth held various jobs after the Navy. She and her friend, Barbara Hastie, co-owned a graphic design business, Heffenon, Hastie and Leibman. She and Barbara lived in an old farmhouse in Lake Katrine, N.Y. Elizabeth summered in Maine for many years and moved to Waldoboro permanently in 2005. Elizabeth loved Maine for “its sky, fields, and the people.” She enjoyed birds, especially seagulls, nature, the ocean, full moons, going to her favorite restaurants for lunch, reading, and had many beloved cats in her lifetime, the most recent being Kisa. She loved birthday celebrations, Christmas tree trimming parties and holidays with her caregivers and their families. Elizabeth also had a wonderful sense of humor.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, William Wall; and friend, Barbara Hastie.
Elizabeth is survived by her brother, John Wall of Toms River, N.J.; six nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews; special caregivers of the last six years that were family to her, Karen Sawyer of Warren, and Pam Trahan of Waldoboro, and their extended families and many dear friends.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thurs., July 3 at Dutch Neck Cemetery in Waldoboro.
