Ellen M. Hewitt, 96, of Kennebunk and Damariscotta, went to be with her Savior and her beloved husband Bob on Sept. 12. Ellen was born on May 25, 1919 to Harold and Enid Flude in South Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y.
She attended New York public schools graduating at the age of 16. Ellen then completed a secretarial course, and worked as a secretary in New York. After several years, Ellen left New York to pursue her dream of attending Aurora College in Aurora, Ill., where she graduated as a member of the Class of 1945. It was here that she met the love her life, Bob Hewitt. They married on May 19, 1945 and moved to Lafayette, R.I. where Bob was a Pastor of the Advent Christian Church.
Ellen and Bob then moved to the Advent Christian Church in Waterbury Conn. It was here that Ellen and Bob completed their family with the addition of their son Mark, and daughter Robin. In 1967, the family moved to Kennebunk where Bob and Ellen spent the next 38 years. During this time Ellen worked as Bob’s church secretary and together they ministered to anyone in need. In 2005, Bob and Ellen moved to Chase Point Assisted Living in Damariscotta to be closer to their much loved grandchildren. Bob passed away in 2006.
Ellen was an accomplished oil painter and cookie baker. She enjoyed hiking and together Ellen and Bob climbed many mountains, including Mt. Washington. Many of her cherished memories were created at the family cottage in Alton Bay, N.H. Here Ellen enjoyed time on their boat and swimming. She always enjoyed being in the sun, an enjoyment that would last throughout her life. Ellen’s faith in Jesus was the foundation of all things in her life.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Seymour Flude; and beloved husband, Rev. Robert C Hewitt.
She is survived by her son, Mark E. Hewitt and wife Miriam of Coconut Creek, Fla.; daughter, Robin Hewitt Bibber and husband Douglas of Arundel; adored grandchildren, Grace and Luke Bibber; and many cherished family members and friends who were dear to her heart.
Friends may call from 4-6 p.m., Tues., Sept. 15 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Wed., Sept. 16 at Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk with the Rev. James King officiating.
