Eugene J. Neilsen, 75, died April 26 at Cove’s Edge, Damariscotta. The son of Eugene and Edith (Ackermann) Neilsen, he was born in Hoboken, N.J., Feb. 3, 1931. Following high school, Gene attended college in Virginia where he majored in computer science. He entered the US Army serving honorably from 1949-1952, when he was discharged as a corporal. He continued his service, remaining in the Army National Guard for several years. Prior to coming to Maine, Gene resided in Baltimore, Md. and worked in Washington, D.C. as an accountant for United Drug Service, D.C. Following his retirement he and his wife came to their home in Damariscotta. He had a lifelong passion for ham radio; loved his guitar, cooking and especially his Shitzu "Willie". He is predeceased by Gloria and Stearns Caswell, and Ann and Wink Locke. Gene leaves his loving wife of 35 years, Norma (Naylor) Neilsen; brother-in-law and wife Fred and Marie Naylor of Damariscotta; nieces and nephews, Bob and Diane Caswell, Chris and Rosanna Caswell, James and Michelle Brown, Kenneth and Linda Flanders, Kathy and Brian Kelsey, Beth and Ricky Weatherbee, Lynette Naylor, and Michael and Bebe Naylor; and many grand nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to be with the family 6-8 p.m., Mon., May 1 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Service to honor Gene 11 a.m., Tues., May 2 at the funeral home with Rev. Ken Dale officiating. He will be laid to rest in the New Harbor Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Damariscotta.
