Frederick Craig Mortimer, 83, of Bristol, died April 15 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. He was born April 1, 1923 in New Rochelle, N.Y., a son of Edmund and Mignonette Smith Mortimer. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Rhode Island in 1951, Master of Arts Degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. in 1965, and a Doctor of Arts Degree from Western Colorado in Grand Junction, Col. in 1974. Fred was a geography professor at University of Virginia for 24 years. He retired and moved to Bristol. Fred loved to travel, sailing, and had a story for everything. His favorite trip was a train trip from Canada to Alaska. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Mortimer, who died in 2001. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Hodgdon Mortimer of Bristol; daughters, Nancy Uhlmann of Alexandria, Va. and Meredith Entin of Austin, Tex.; step-sons, Paul K. Hodgdon and wife Linda of Las Vegas, Nev. and Dale Hodgdon of Westport Island; step-daughters, Linda DeLong and husband William of Westport Island, Donna Gregory and husband Tom of Westport Island; Karen Hodgdon of Kennebunk; Gail Craft and husband Robert of Covington, Va. and Beverly Hodgdon of Covington, Va.; step daughter-in-law Sarah Hodgdon of Westport Island; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family on Westport Island. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Andrews Hospital, P.O.
