Frederick W. Harrington III, of Lee, N.H., passed away July 18 at his home after a long battle with several health issues.
Fred was born in 1944, was raised in Portsmouth, N.H. and graduated with the class of 1963 at Portsmouth High School. In September of that same year he joined the U.S. Army and applied for advanced infantry training and graduated from jump school at Fort Benning, Ga. Soon after that he was assigned to the 11th Air Assault and undertook more training with the newly formed Air Assault Group which trained for the very first time with the newly acquired Huey helicopters in techniques of air assault.
After training, he was shipped overseas to Vietnam and assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry (Air Mobile) located in the central highlands at Ahn Khe. Fred was involved in several campaigns in his one year of duty and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle and the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. He finished his tour and was honorable discharged in 1966 when he returned to his home town of Portsmouth, N.H.
He is survived by brother, Douglas Harrington of Stratham, N.H.; youngest brother, Jeffrey Harrington of Nottingham, N.H.; and son, Zachary Smith of Newcastle.
He is predeceased by parents, Frederick Harrington Jr. and Gertrude Harrington; brother, Gregory Harrington, who passed away from cancer at the age of 57.
There will be no calling hours and no formal funeral as per his request.
