George F. James Sr., 70, of Dresden, died Jan. 14 at his residence.
He was born in Dresden on Jan. 29, 1938, a son of Ernest C. and Melva G. (Bixby) James.
He attended schools in Dresden and on March 26, 1959 he married Sharon M. Lewis. He was a self employed marine worm digger and also owned and operated James Eddy Smelt Camps on the Eastern River in Dresden until his retirement in 2005 when his sons took over the business.
He enjoyed being with his family, grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and racing his stock car in Wiscasset and was a great guitarist.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles James and Frank James; and one sister, Iona Pinkham.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon M. James of Dresden; two sons, George F. James Jr. and wife Lisa of Dresden, and Peter J. James and companion Megan Rogers of Dresden; four daughters, Brenda James and husband Lester Martin of Boothbay, Sally Emmons and husband Richard of Abbott, Cheryl L. Simmons of Dresden, and Deborah J. James of Dresden; three brothers, Ernest James and wife Marie of Inverness, Fla., Wilmer James and wife Ellen of Wiscasset, and Kevin James of Wiscasset; three sisters, Frances Cray of Richmond, Mamie Chapman of Dresden, and Valerie Hinkley and husband Harold of Wiscasset; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Sat., Jan. 17 at Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset. Funeral service 2 p.m., Sun., Jan. 18 at the Wiscasset Church of the Nazarene, 255 Gardiner Rd., Wiscasset with Pastor Wally Staples officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Dresden in the spring.
