Gilbert Jean Charbonneau, 73, passed away on the morning of Sept. 26 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. Born in Walhalla, N.D. on Jan. 9, 1943, he was the son of Armand and Marianne Charbonneau. He was a beloved brother, husband and uncle. Gil loved and cared for all around him.
After serving in Vietnam, he returned to San Diego to sail and restore yachts for many years, eventually becoming a captain. That led him to Maine where he married Mary Browne in 1975. They resided in Hendricks Head Lighthouse in Southport where he created extraordinary ships in the bottle, which are displayed in museums, and featured on TV shows, magazines and newspapers.
The last few years of Gil’s life were spent at Chase Point and Cove’s Edge where he was loved and very well cared for by the wonderful staff. As he neared the end, he danced his way to the Spirit world with Native Elders and his wonderful niece, Sandy.
